Random forest clustering2/28/2024 There is much less confusion between clusters and the algorithm did not the same label to different clusters as before. title ( 'Hierarchical clustering: good results' ) plt. scatter ( sup_embed_et, sup_embed_et, s = 1, c = final_cluster_df, cmap = 'plasma' ) plt. This way, we save memory and time, at the cost of not clustering every instance in our data. We start by taking a sample of the embedding we have and runnning single-linkage clustering on it. Let us experiment with hierarchical clustering now. Also, it misses some of the assignments, especially on the large clusters. The algorithm assigns the same label to different clusters, oversimplifying the structure. ylabel ( '$x_1$' )Ĭlustering using a Decision tree showed fair results, but with much room for improvement. title ( 'Clustering with Decision Trees: room for improvement' ) plt. scatter ( sup_embed_et, sup_embed_et, s = 1, c = clusters, cmap = 'plasma' ) plt. # max_leaf_nodes should be our intended number of clustersĭt = DecisionTreeClassifier ( max_leaf_nodes = 20 ) # fitting and applyingĭt. We just train a Decision Tree Classifier setting the maximum number of leaf nodes max_leaf_nodes equal to our number of intended clusters. Let us use a decision tree for clustering, which is a simplification of our forest. Let us try some clustering alternatives to solve this problem. However, we need to provide it with the full distance matrix between all samples, which is very expensive to get. Given that we’re using a non-eucliean distance metric, the first algorithm that comes to mind is hierarchical clustering. Let us try to devise a way to make this viable. So now that we have a reliable way of comparing samples, we can perform clustering! However, we have a problem: the scale of the data. This fact helps explain why we could recover meaningful structure: our leaf similarity measure effectively throws away distances on the irrelevant dimensions’ axes. The algorithm correctly identified 5 important variables as well. sort_values ( 'importance', ascending = False ). DataFrame () # showing importances in decresing order # building a dataframe to inspect variable importance We use a cheap 2-fold cross validation, as we have a reasonable amount of data. We choose large min_samples_leaf to keep our trees from growing too much and our leaf-based similarity easy to compute. Model Validationįirst, let us validate our model, an ExtraTrees from sklearn. The intuition is simple: train a Random Forest (or better, Extremely Randomized Trees) to predict the target variable and extract similarities between samples by looking at how many times they co-ocurred on the leaves of the forest. Forest embeddingsĪs previously discussed here, forest embeddings present a nice solution for extracting relevant structure in messy and high-dimensional data. The shape of the individual clusters resembles what we got in the unsupervised embedding. Seems like UMAP just separated the classes not discarding the irrelevant features. The results are a little bit underwhelming, as we only observe 2 clusters (not the intended 20). legend ( fontsize = 16, markerscale = 5 ) title ( 'Supervised embedding with UMAP: trivial separation' ) plt. scatter ( sup_embed_umap, sup_embed_umap, s = 1, c = 'C1', cmap = 'viridis', label = '$y=1$' ) plt. scatter ( sup_embed_umap, sup_embed_umap, s = 1, c = 'C0', cmap = 'viridis', label = '$y=0$' ) plt. ![]() # plotting the supervised embedding with UMAP

Please join us for an interesting conversation with Yacine Diop Djibo, my guest tomorrow, *Thursday 16th November at 1 pm EDT, 6 pm GMT, 7 pm WAT & BST, 7 pm CET* on IG. She is the Founder of Speak Up Africsa, an NGO that focuses on strategic communication, policy and advocacy. She has a true calling for finding sustainable solutions to the most challenging problems facing the African people, more specifically in the health and well-being of women and children. Senegalese and American, she has lived in many countries and travelled the world. Tomorrow Thursday 16th of November 2023 I will welcome another very special guest with a unique journey. So we are extremely grateful to all the beautiful souls we meet along the way. So yes, we are doers, a duo of African Doers making a difference individually and together, a strong partnership contributing day in and day out, giving our best to live a meaningful life and leave a legacy. And at the end of each one Gilles and I look at one another and say : “this was the best one ever”! But the simple truth is the deep connection we create with the participants is what makes them all uniquely fulfilling. Every one of our training sessions comes with it’s load of emotions and learnings so rich, intense moments and great laughters. In order to make that difference, Gilles Amadou Acogny and I designed our methodology using a balanced amount of kindness and good will, generosity and high standards, psychology and neuroscience, sociology and diplomacy, high energy and authenticity, empathy and determination, and, last but not least, the lessons we each learned from our 35+ years of professional experience. 5000 + people trained in the last 6 years with Acosphere Ltd. It became a benchmark and an inspiration for others… Now here I am today, at a point in my journey where I am contributing to shifting mindsets and liberating people’s thoughts and words through transformational public speaking training, but also leadership, communication and personal development trainings. Like the annual listing of the 100 Most Influential Women in Africa that I created for Forbes Afrique. That’s when I started writing about Africa, using my words to portray the face of our continent that mainstream press neglected. Inevitably, that led me to study communications in order to know what we mean when we use signs, words and body language. Then I studied political science so I could better apprehend the impact of politics on our societies. I needed to better understand our intricate societies and cultures. ![]() As an African teenager living in Europe, I already wanted to do something meaningful for Africa. ![]() ![]() That’s when I asked myself the question : “What does it really mean to be an African Doer ?”Īs I paused to think about it the following thoughts came to my mind. Betta fish and zebra loach2/28/2024 ![]() Try an under-gravel filter for oxygenation and waste reduction. Install a filter that will turn over the tank’s water 10 to 15 times per hour, oxygenate the water, and provide minimal current. You want to encourage some algae growth, but you want to be able to see into your tank! Use a magnet algae cleaner to keep the glass nice. ![]() You could also place floating aquarium plants for the same effect. Keep the lighting in your tank dim with a low-output lamp. The Zebra loach receives filtered light in its natural habitat due to overhanging foliage. Test your water weekly to ensure a stable, consistent environment. The pH range should be between 6.5 and 7.5, and the hardness between 5 to 12 dGH. Keep the temperature between 73 – 79☏ (23 – 26☌). Vacuum the gravel, but do not remove the algae on the decorations. Plan on changing out 20-30% of the water each week. When introducing a Zebra loach to your tank, make sure the water conditions have stabilized, as fluctuations can stress your fish. The plants can also encourage algae growth, which the loaches will eat. Plan on a planted tank, as this species loves highly-oxygenated water. Place plenty of rocks, caves, or driftwood to allow places to shelter or hide. This will help to protect your loach’s delicate barbels and underside. Line the bottom with smooth gravel or fine sand. The best tank setup for Zebra loaches is one that has planted areas, open space for swimming, and places to hide.Ĭover your tank with a tight-fitting lid, as loaches can occasionally leap out of the tank.Īll-in-all, you want to try to replicate their natural habitat as much as possible. Naturally, an even larger tank would be better to allow more room for plants and other species. They do love to eat snails, so be aware if you intend to add those to your tank.īecause Zebra loaches are happiest in a group of at least five, plan on a minimum tank size of 30-gallons. Occasionally, Zebra loaches can nip at each other but rarely bother other species. Keeping them in pairs or very small groups can stress them and lead to aggression, so consider a group of at least five in your community aquarium. They tend to stay in the bottom area of the tank and love to explore the features there. In nature, Zebra loaches tend to be nocturnal, but in an aquarium, they can be quite active during the day. LifespanĪ wonderful thing about Zebra loaches is that they have a long lifespan.Īlthough most fall in the range of 5 to 8 years, they can live anywhere from 10 to 15 years with good care. SizeĮxpect your zebra loach to grow to between three and four inches in length (7 to 10 cm). However, the female can appear rounder in the belly when carrying eggs. There is not much deviation between male and female zebra loaches. The dorsal fin resembles half of a fan, and the tail fin is forked. Their body shape grows larger toward the dorsal fin, then tapers off again at the tail. Their heads taper downward toward the mouth, which has four pairs of barbels. The loach’s dorsal and tail fins are translucent and feature brown or black bands that continue the body’s pattern. ![]() The stripes angle slightly forward in front of the eyes, then switch to a backward angle on the rest of the body. These bands are striped with white lines, giving the zebra appearance. Their yellow-green body has nine vertical, thick blue-green bands. The Zebra loach has beautifully-patterned coloration. It is now on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s list of endangered species. Trees overhang and shade these waters, and leaf litter is prevalent.ĭue to over-development, deforestation, and pollution, the Zebra loach’s population has been reduced. The streams in this region have slow or moderate currents, clear water, and rocky or sandy bottoms. It lives in streams flowing through the Western Ghats mountain range. The Zebra loach has an extremely limited habitat in nature. Overall, they are a great addition to a community tank that can be around for many years. They do require a bit more care on the part of the aquarium keeper to ensure their water conditions are stable, and they eat a varied diet. It is a peaceful species, spending most of its time along the bottom. This freshwater fish is a member of the Cobitidae family and hails from slow-moving waters in southern India. With its lovely coloration, it is easy to see why the zebra loach (Botia striata) is an aquarium favorite.

Wim hof method shower2/28/2024 ![]() Plus, water exerts pressure (known as hydrostatic pressure) on the body, which promotes blood flow to major organs like the heart, brain, and lungs, according to research. Proponents claim that this method increases energy, boosts the immune system, improves sleep, and helps the body heal faster. He took what he learned from his cold experiences and created the Wim Hof Method, a combination of breath work, cold therapy, and commitment practices. His feats include swimming underneath ice for approximately 217 feet and standing in a container while covered in ice cubes for more than 112 minutes, according to his website. Hof, also known as "The Iceman," is a Dutch extreme athlete who earned his nickname by breaking world records related to cold exposure. Recent interest in cold water therapy is thanks in part to Wim Hof. ![]() As a result, many professional and everyday athletes turn to cold water therapy to help recover from exercise. “A lot of the research that we see now shows how cold water influences circulation and how that plays into muscle damage that occurs as a result of exercise, and also some of the cellular processes that go into muscle soreness,” says Mathew Welch, CSCS, an exercise physiologist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. In the early 2000s, researchers turned their attention to cold water and exercise recovery. Hines came out with research in the early 20th century that helped us understand some of how cold water immersion works in the body - in particular, the effects of cold water immersion on blood pressure and the autonomic nervous system, which controls automatic physiological processes like heart rate. For example, cold water immersion was used for therapeutic and relaxation purposes in ancient Greece and promoted by Roman physician Claudius Galen as a treatment for fever, according to a review published in February 2022 in the European Journal of Applied Physiology. Read on to learn about potential health benefits and the possible risks of cold water approaches for health and medical uses, and to evaluate if this therapy is worth discussing with your doctor.Ĭultures around the world have used cold water therapy for thousands of years. Research on the topic has generally focused on pain, muscular injury prevention and recovery, and mood, and cold water therapy is considered a complementary therapy given that it’s an evolving field. While it has a long history, it’s primarily used to speed healing after an injury, ease joint and muscle pain, and quicken recovery from exercise, among other possible health benefits. While you might be tempted to write off these feats as a social media trend, submerging your body in bone-chilling water is actually an age-old practice known as cold water therapy, a type of cryotherapy.Ĭold water therapy is the use of water to promote health or manage disease, according to research. Scroll through Instagram and you’ll likely see videos of people climbing into tubs filled with ice and frigid water, taking cold showers, or plunging into freezing alpine lakes.

![]() I want to chime here because I went through this with my CyberPower UpS and now am looking for another brand. My question then becomes would this have worked without the RMCARD installed and I just didn't wait long enough? Or is this something that only happens because the RMCARD is installed and that configuration is accessible/set? Ultimately though in the time it took for me to get from the wiring closet I had the unit in for testing to my desk to check the management interface it had powered itself back on and was again providing power to the connected devices. Another oddity I noticed was that the management card was still linked up and accessible for a while after the battery was dead. This automatic power on was delayed by a couple minutes, which is probably expected, but I didn't hear anything or notice any other activity from the UPS for the first minute or so after plugging it back in. Unfortunately not powering back on automatically after power is restored is a dealbreaker, so I want to make sure I'm not missing something here.ĮDIT: I just finished the test after installing the management card and the UPS did power back on after utility power was restored. The CyberPower units make a lot of sense for our specific application, obviously the APC units are nice but for the price of not just the UPS but the management cards the CyberPower units are much more cost effective. I still have to run this test again with the management card in place just to see if the behavior is the same, but I wanted to pose the question. Since these are the default settings, I'd assume that they were in this state before I ever installed the management card, but maybe they only get set this way after the management card is installed. Within the web management interface under UPS>Configuration there is a section called "Power Restore" that has the following settings out of the box, which after reading through the manual seems to imply that the UPS should power back on automatically after utility power is restored. This first test was done before installing the RMCARD205 into it. When we got the unit in I immediately went to test this theory by plugging some things into it and killing it on purpose after unplugging it from the wall and I noticed the same behavior: when I plugged it back into the wall it did not turn itself back on again until I physically pressed the power button to turn it off and then again to turn it on. This is also how our current APC units behave. I thought this was strange at the time because no other UPS I had experience with did this, they always powered themselves back on once power was restored. One thing I remember from back then though was we had a power outage that lasted long enough to completely kill the batteries but the UPS did not power back on after power was restored. We have purchased a single CyberPower PR1000LCDRT1U to test out as it checks a lot of our boxes (price, form factor, physical size, capacity) and I have some experience with this model from a previous job.
